Monkey Hat
Free Crochet Pattern

MATERIALS:
Red Heart 4 ply yarns in the colors you like (light & dark of same color) small amount of cardboard, needle to take yarn, felt, craft glue, size J (adult) & F (child) hooks or hooks to obtain gauge.
GAUGE: J Hook: 3 hdc = 1”, 2 rows hdc = 1”, 4 (sc, dc st combination) = 1-1\4”, 4 rows pattern = 1-1\2”.
F hook: 4 hdc = 1”, 3 rows hdc = 1”, 4 (sc, dc st combination) = 1”. 3 rows pattern = 1”.
FINISHED SIZE: Hat made with J hook: 23” inside measurement and will fit most adults.  Hat made with F hook: 18” inside measurement & will fit 6 mo – 1 yr old.
HAT:
With dark yarn and hook ch-4, sl st to form a ring.
RND 1: Ch-1, work 12 hdc in ring, sl st top beg hdc, ch-1, turn.  (12 sts)
RND 2-3: (2 hdc next st, hdc next st) around, sl st top beg hdc, ch-1, turn.  (18 sts)(27 sts)
RND 4-5: (2 hdc next st, hdc next 2 sts) around, sl st top beg hdc, ch-1, turn.  (36 sts)(48 sts)
RND 6: Hdc ea st around, sl st top beg hdc, ch-1, turn.
RND 7: (2 hdc next st, hdc next 3 sts) around, sl st top beg hdc, ch-1, turn.  (60 sts)
RND 8-15: Rep rnd 6.  End rnd 15 fasten off.
HAT BRIM:
ROW 1: With dark yarn and hook ch-26, hdc 3rd ch from hook, hdc next 2 ch, sc next 3, sl st next 12, sc next 3, hdc last 3 ch, fasten off. (24 sts + sl sts)
ROW 2: With dark yarn and hook join in 1st st bottom of row 1, you will be working across the bottom of the foundation row (in bottom of sts made row 1), ch-1, hdc same st as beg ch-1, hdc ea st across, ch-1, turn.  (24 sts)
ROW 3-6: Hdc dec next 2 sts, hdc ea st across, ch-1, turn.  (23 sts)(22 sts)(21 sts)(20 sts)
ROW 7-9: Hdc dec next 2 sts, hdc ea st across to last 2 sts, hdc dec last 2 sts, ch-1, turn.  End row 9 fasten off.  (18 sts)(16 sts)(14 sts)
